How Often Should You Replace UPS Batteries?

One of the most important, but often overlooked, pieces of equipment in an edit suite or machine room is the UPS Battery Backup. It is very important to make sure you are running regular tests on your UPS systems to ensure that the battery is fully function, and is strong enough to cover the load of the systems you are placing on it. You do not want to find out your battery is dead after a four our editing session and the power fluctuates in your bay.

Most UPS batteries are rated to last between 3-5 years, but usage and the operating environment can affect the accuracy of that rating. UPS systems have test tools built into the device itself, and it is important to take note of those results. Users should also inspect the batteries themselves for swelling, as this is a clear sign that the batteries need to be replaced.

If the UPS itself is older than five years, manufactures will recommend replacing the whole unit, rather than just the battery itself.

My preferred UPS for edit suites is the APC 1500VA. It is relatively small, is strong enough to cover most modern edit setups, and has an easy to replace battery for when the time comes.
